The fundamental spark of goodness in individual human beings is no great mystery. It is simply the desire for others to thrive, to realize their dreams, and to be happy, at least so long as this does not interfere with our own needs.

This desire is not universal but is very common. Some of the worst tyrants in our history, for example, had at least a sincere desire that some others do well if not all. It also takes but a moment of thought to realize that the ultimate source of this desire, for particular individuals, is not the same.

Clearly then, the primary measure of goodness ought not to be the source of the desire but its strength and breadth. The more others we want to do well. The stronger we feel this.

It is also clear that this is no more innate than any of Reason's gifts and must be developed by thought and discipline.
